'The Horse Race' (Story Code 'B511') by David P. Lewis and Booker Bradshaw

The three fugitives have taken refuge in the home of a human blacksmith named Barlow, and his son, Zandar. When several gorilla troopers arrive with Urko’s racing horse demanding that it be shod, Virdon, Burke and Galen hide in the barn - where Galen is stung by a poisonous tiger scorpion. Realising that unless he receives the antidote soon, Galen will die, Zandar sets of on horseback for a nearby clinic, ignoring the fact that the penalty for riding a horse is death. He is able to secure the drug and get it to Galen in time, but in his rush home he is seen at shot at by gorillas, who take him away to make an example of him. A recovered Galen learns that the local prefect is an old friend of his. Paying the chimpanzee a visit, Galen learns that his friend has been forced to enter his horse in a race against General Urko’s stallion – a competition he will surely lose, along with everything he owns – and that Zandar is to be executed after the race as part of the festivities. The Prefect and the fugitives make a deal: Virdon will ride in the race against Urko, and if he wins, the boy will go free. All Virdon has to do is find a way to take part while keeping his identity a secret from Urko…
