'Paradise Lost' by Jason Smilovic

After attending Will’s funeral, Jaime visits her dead lover’s apartment, where she finds a secret compartment containing a dossier on her dating back two years before they first met. She heads for a bar to drown her sorrows, but is interrupted by Jonas, who offers her a job with the Berkut Group – a private, clandestine group dedicated to stopping world threats from rogue agencies – but Jaime declines. The following day, after a visit to Becca’s principal to discuss her sister’s punishment for smoking pot on campus, Jaime meets with some friends, but quickly becomes depressed when she realises that they are all moving on with their lives while she just stagnates. However, after encountering a friendly man named Antonio in a bookstore, and saving a suicidal woman from jumping from a rooftop, Jaime gains a new perspective on life; she visits Jonas and agrees to his offer of a job – but on her conditions. Jonas is unsurprised, and introduces Jaime to her new handler: Antonio. Under Jae’s guidance Jaime begins a regime of physical and combat training, and it isn’t long before she is sent on her first mission, accompanying Ruth to a small Idaho town named Paradise, where the entire population has been inexplicably wiped out. Meanwhile, Jae receives a message from Sarah Corvus, and then spends the night in a hotel room with the lover he thought he had killed. Back in Paradise, Ruth determines the cause of the massacre to be DMC30, an airborne synthetic toxin developed by the Berkut Group; then a squad of soldiers appears and opens fire on Jaime…
