The Doctor

The TARDIS lands in Paris, 1572, just before the Massacre of Saint Bartholomew's Day. The Doctor decides to visit the famous apothecary, Charles Preslin, while Steven befriends a group of Huguenots from the household of the Protestant Admiral de Coligny. When he rescues Anne Chaplet, a servant girl, from some pursuing guards, she tells the Huguenots of a plan by the Catholic Queen Mother, Catherine de Medici, to massacre all French Protestants. Steven discovers that it appears that the much-hated Catholic dignitary, the Abbot of Amboise, is actually the Doctor in disguise; he follows him, and overhears a plan to murder de Coligney. The attempt fails and the abbot is held responsible, and is killed. Steven realises that he was not the Doctor after all, but merely his double, and he rejoins the Doctor at Preslin's shop. The two of them leave Paris as the massacre begins. They then arrive on Wimbledon common, and gain a new companion, Dodo Chaplet.
