Having successfully obtained three parts of the Nidas, Phil, Helen and Terry arrive in Victorian London, in the sewers beneath the Tower of London. Also here is Belor, who plans to break into the Wakefield Tower before the State Opening of Parliament, and steal the fourth segment of the Nidas from its resting place amongst the Crown Jewels. Belor is aided by two Thuggees, Suleiman and Rhanji, from the notorious gang known as the Bombay Bandicoots, and has elicited their help by promising them the Koh-i-Noor Diamond, which they want to take back to India. After using a fake message from Rothgo to send the three children in the wrong direction, Belor disguises herself as an old crone and meets T.J. Shadrach, a rather useless detective who is on the trail of the Thuggees. Mistaking him for Rothgo in disguise, Belor ‘restores’ Shadrach’s ‘proper’ face, causing the Victorian gentleman much confusion; she then poses as Shadrach’s wife, Acacia, to get him out of the way. Realising they have been duped, Phil, Helen and Terry double back and meet Shadrach, immediately taking him for Rothgo. Together they discover the secret tunnel that Belor and the Thuggees have used to enter the Tower and make their way to the Crown Jewels. Meanwhile, in the Tower, two Beefeaters stand guard outside the Jewel House – and one of the guards looks uncannily like Rothgo…
