'Quantity: Unknown' by Don Brinkley

When a plane crashes leaving no survivors, amongst the wreckage is found a mysterious weightless cylinder. The artefact is sent under armed guard on a truck to the Sperrick Plant for analysis, but en route the security men, led by Harry Swain, are ambushed by a group of attackers dressed as guards. On learning that when one of the security men shot an attacker, the dying man then burst into flames, David Vincent arrives to find out more. But when he arranges to set a trap for the attackers, he is instead captured at gunpoint by Swain, and finds himself accused of being an alien from outer space…
