The Doctor

Whilst returning to Nerva via the transmat, the Doctor, Sarah and Harry are intercepted by the Time Lords and transported instead to the planet Skaro, at a crucial stage in its early history. A Time Lord assigns the Doctor a mission to prevent or alter the Daleks' development, so that the creatures will become less of a threat to the universe. He gives the Doctor a Time Ring, which will take him and his companions back to the TARDIS once their mission is complete. The Doctor and Harry are captured by Kaleds, who are in the middle of a war of attrition with the planet's other race, the Thals. Sarah meets Sevrin, a Muto, whose people have been affected by the radiation that is a result of the war. The two of them are captured by the Thals, and put to work on building a giant warhead. Meanwhile, the Kaleds' chief scientist, Davros, has been conducting genetic experiments in order to discover the final form into which his race will mutate, and has devised a protective mobile casing in which the mutated creatures can survive. The Doctor immediately recognises this travel device as a Dalek, and manages to persuade the Kaled leaders, horrified at the Davros's genetic alterations, to stop the experiments. Davros, together with his sadistic aide, Nyder, responds by conspiring with the Thals to use their rocket to destroy the Kaled city; he then activates the Daleks and orders them to exterminate the Thals and the remaining members of the Kaled elite. The Doctor is presented with the opportunity to destroy the embryo Daleks, but is unable to commit genocide, citing that out of their evil will come good -races that would otherwise be enemies would form alliances in order to defeat their common enemy. The Daleks seize control, killing everyone in the bunker, including Davros himself. A group of Thal soldiers manage to detonate explosives at the entrance to the bunker, sealing the Daleks inside. As the Doctor and his friends leave with the aid of the time Ring, he estimates that his intervention will have delayed the Daleks' development by about a thousand years.
