In 1988, Fry goes ice-fishing with his father and ends up nearly drowning in freezing cold water. While off sick he gets an idea for the school science fair: infecting his pet guinea pig with the common cold and sending him into space… Centuries later, Fry takes his Planet Express friends ice-fishing in New New York, and ends up with another cold. However, in the 31st Century the common cold has been extinct for five hundred years, and the human race is no longer immune to it: as soon as the rest of the crew catch Fry’s cold, the Planet Express Headquarters is sealed off and placed under quarantine by the authorities. Bender is tasked with looking after everyone, but after being sneezed on by Zoidberg, he escapes from the quarantine and promptly infects everyone outside. Soon the whole of New New York is infected with the common cold – so the authorities quarantine the entire city, scoop it up from the Earth and then send it flying into the sun…
