'Heart of Gold' by Brent Matthews

Serenity receives a distress call addressed to Inara: her friend Nandi runs a bordello which is under threat from a gunslinger named Rance Burgess; it seems he got one of the prostitutes, Petaline, pregnant and is now demanding to take ownership of the child as soon as it is born. Mal offers to help, despite a lack of financial – or other – compensation, and Jayne is only too eager to support his decision. Serenity soon arrives at the bordello, and Mal and his crew make prepare the house for an armed siege by Burgess and his men. But then the captain finds himself falling for the madam…
