The Doctor

The TARDIS lands in Palestine in the 12th Century, where a holy war is in progress between King Richard the Lionheart's forces, and those of the Saracen ruler Saladin. The travellers are caught up in a Saracen ambushed, and Barbara is kidnapped. The Doctor, Ian and Vicki travel to King Richard's palace in the city of Jaffa, where Ian is knighted by the King; he is given the King's permission to search for Barbara, while the Doctor and Vicki become involved in court politics. King Richard plans to marry off his sister, Joanna, to Saphadin, the brother of Saladin, in order to end the war, but Joanna finds out and refuses to comply. The Doctor and Vicki make an enemy of the King's advisor, the Earl of Leicester, and have to flee the palace when they are about to be burnt at the stake as sorcerers. Ian rescues Barbara from the murderous Emir El Akir, and the two of them rejoin the Doctor and Vicki at the TARDIS.
