'The Metal Bug' by Dave Ingham

Small is in the Music Boat fishing in space when he catches a strange metal ball. He takes it home to show the others, but they don’t know what it is and so Major puts it on a shelf it his workshop. Later on the ball breaks open and a metal caterpillar emerges; the creature crawls through the Clanger’s tunnels, eating all the metal leaves on every tree it finds. Upset at the holes in her tree’s beautiful leaves, the Soup Dragon tells the Clangers; they try to catch the caterpillar in a metal bucket – but it just eats its way out. The escaped bug then spins a metal cocoon around itself, and the Clangers wonder what will come out of it…
