'I am the Eggbot' by Daniel Postgate

One night, while the Clangers are all asleep in bed, a small egg-shaped robot lands on the surface of the planet. Apparently searching for something, the ‘eggbot’ rolls into the Clangers’ tunnel system and ends up stuck inside a tiny cave. Woken by the robot’s cries, the Clangers investigate, but even Tiny cannot get through the gap to reach the stricken eggbot. Then the Clangers hear a loud noise coming from the surface of the planet: another, giant eggbot has arrived, searching for its missing companion – but how will it get inside the tunnel to rescue the little lost eggbot?
