Avon teams up with a geologist called Gerren to steal a consignment of Feldon crystals, a priceless power source used by the Federation. These crystals are mined on the planet Mecron II in an operation run by Belkov, a skilled games player. However, when Gerren and his team attempt to steal the crystals from a private stash held aboard Belvok’s ship, Orbiter, Gerren’s assistant is killed and Gerren injured by the deadly games that act as the ship’s security systems. Gerren is rescued by the Scorpio crew; meanwhile, Belkov is the subject of an investigation by Commissioner Sleer - Servalan - who suspects him of embezzlement. Belkov bluffs Servalan, and the contacts Avon, asking for his help in return for half of his supply of Feldon crystals. But then Belkov betrays them, capturing Tarrant and Dayna and planning to turn them over to Servalan. While Avon uses Orac to tap into Gambit, Belkov’s computer, Vila rescues Tarrant and Dayna. The crew then board Orbiter and face the games: Soolin out-shoots a computer version of herself; Tarrant beats a flight simulator; and Vila unlocks a door. When Avon is quizzed by Gambit in the final game, he realises that it is all part of a trap: the only crystals aboard are those that power the ship, and the endgame will result in the ship plunging into a black hole, ensuring that the crystals cause the hole to devour everything in the vicinity. They return to Scorpio and destroy Orbiter, counteracting the effects of the black hole. Belkov escapes as Gambit self-destructs - the whole enterprise was for nothing.
