The TARDIS arrives in Mexico in the 15th Century, inside the tomb of the late Aztec priest Yetaxa. When the Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan explore the temple, the tomb door closes behind them, cutting them off from the ship. After finding a bracelet in the tomb, Barbara is proclaimed by the High Priest of Knowledge, Autloc, as the divine reincarnation of Yetaxa. Susan becomes her handmaiden, and chosen to be married to the Perfect Victim, who is to be sacrificed to the gods. Ian is appointed Chief of the Aztec Warriors, and comes into conflict with Ixta, the Chosen Leader; the Doctor is left in the Garden of the Aged, where he flirts with an wise woman, Cameca, partly to find a way back inside the tomb. Barbara incurs the enmity of Tlotoxl, the High Priest of Sacrifice, when, against the Doctor's advice, she attempts to use her authority to end the Aztec practise of human sacrifice to their gods. On the Day of Darkness - a solar eclipse - Ian's unwilling conflict with Ixta ends in a fight in which Ixta is killed, falling from the temple roof to his death on the streets below. The Doctor reopens the tomb using a wheel and pulley - the Aztecs having not yet mastered the use of the wheel - and the travellers escape.
