Several undertakers arrive with a coffin to take away a businessman - while he is still very much alive. Steed searches for the man he was to escort to New York, but instead finds him locked away in an exclusive retirement home, and when the man's neighbour is also brought to the home under strange circumstances, Mrs. Gale takes a job there in order to investigate. She and Steed uncover a scheme to enable the families of millionaires to evade death taxes: when a rich relative dies, they arrange to have the money transferred to the surviving spouse, and then replace the deceased with a double, who will then represent that person for the legally required waiting period of five years. But these millionaires may not be dying of natural causes, and what happens to the double when the five years are up…?
