When Steed attends the funeral of a retired agent held in Cornwall, he notices an unusually high number of recent burials for such a small, almost deserted village. He and Mrs. Gale investigate, and uncover a murder-for-hire scheme by ‘Mandrake Investments’, who arrange for the corpses of poisoned victims to be buried in the churchyard, which is located near a disused tin mine; the heavy arsenic-level of the soil will prevent any possible exhumations and post-mortems from finding anything unusual...
