Corporal Craig of the Highland Guards is inexplicably found dead, and the bullets that killed him are found to come from three different rifles. In order to uncover the truth, Major Steed returns to service, and, together with Mrs. Gale, discovers that Craig was executed for treason. They soon learn of a plot to take over the government and to replace the royal family of Windsor with a descendent of the Stuart royal line. Not only that, but when Mrs. Gale learns that she is of royal blood, she finds herself part of the coup and soon be crowned as Queen Anne II....
