The Doctor

While the Doctor and Peri receive a distress call from Earth, Commander Lytton, the mercenary stranded on Earth following events with the Daleks, has employed the services of a group of thieves - Griffiths, Payne and Russell - to break into a jewellery store via the sewers beneath Fleet Street. Trying to locate the source of the signal, the Doctor and Peri first arrive in the junkyard at 76, Totter's Lane, then a scrap yard, where they find the entrance to Lytton's tunnel. Lytton's real plan is to make contact with a squad of Cybermen who are located in a hidden base under the city of London. A Cyber Scout kills Payne, while Russell, in reality an undercover policeman, meets the Doctor and Peri. Lytton joins forces with the Cybermen, who kill Russell and capture the Doctor and Peri; the metal giants then force the Doctor to take them all to the planet Telos to meet the Cyber Leader. Here the Doctor discovers that the Cybermen have captured an alien time vessel, which they plan to use to change history - by travelling back to 1986, the Cybermen want to destroy the Earth by crashing Halley's Comet into it, and therefore preventing the destruction of their home world of Mondas. The Cybermen have taken over the huge cryogenic freezers belonging to Telos' natives, the Cryons, which they are using to store their race in a state of suspended animation. The Doctor is imprisoned in a refrigerated storeroom containing vastial, a mineral that explodes violently when its temperature is raised above fifteen degrees. Here he meets Flast, a Cryon dissident who tell him that Lytton is secretly in the employ of the Cryons; the race have realised that their world is lost, but want the mercenary to steal the time vessel to stop the Cybermen and save Earth. But, although Lytton is aided by Griffiths and two of the time vessel's crew, Stratton and Bates, the plan fails; the crook and the crewmen are killed, while Lytton is captured and partially cybernised. The Doctor attempts to rescue Lytton, and the two of them are able to destroy the Cyberleader, but at the cost of Lytton's life. Flast uses a thermal lance to cause the vastial to heat up and trigger an enormous explosion that destroys the Cybermen and their base.
